The [DR] Phrasebook: LAN Lingo

When LANing, [DR] members sometimes seem to speak in code. What follows is a translation guide for some of the more common LAN lingo - much of this game-speak may be familiar to experienced LANers, some is distinctly [DR].

     1. LAN - Short for local area network. Usually means a LAN party. "See you at the LAN."

     2. LAN (verb) - To hold a LAN or play games at a LAN. "Do you want to LAN tonight? I've been LANing all week."

     3. Frag - Gaming term for a kill. "I had ten frags that round."

     4. Frag (verb) - To kill. "I fragged two enemies with my grenade."

     5. Clan - A group of affiliated gamers. "[DR] is the best clan."

     6. Tags - The tag in front of a player's name that shows clan affiliation. "[DR]Cain wears his [DR] tags."

     7. Server - The host computer for an internet/LAN game. "Connect to the server to play."

     8. L337 - Pronounced "leet"; internet slang for the language that hackers/gamers type in, using some numbers as letters. "I sp33k l337."

     9. W00t - An exclamation of joy and success. "We won! Let's have a w00t!"

     10. Unw00t - The opposite of w00t. "I got wasted - what a major unw00t..."

     11. Pull an Eric/Get Ericed - To be somehow injured in the groin. "He Ericed me with the AWP! Ouch!"

     12. Shizzle - A multipurpose verb that may be used to convey any strong meaning. "I got shizzled by Zergs"; "Let's shizzle the terrorists!"

     13. Hizzle - A multipurpose noun used as the object of shizzle. "We came around the crate he was camping behind, and he shizzled our hizzle."

     14. Camping - Hiding in a single spot, trying to ambush players. Often unpopular. "Quit camping and come fight me!"

     15. AWPed - To be killed with the AWP, or otherwise sniped from long range. "I didn't even see her before she AWPed me!"

     16. N00b - Short for newbie. Often used as a derogatory term to describe new or bad players. "I can't believe I was fragged by that n00b!"

     17. N00b cannon - A bad weapon, but one that is popular with new players. "Don't buy the n00b cannon - it's worthless."

     18. H4x0r - L337 for a hacker, or cheater. "Stop cheating! You're such a h4x0r!"

     19. Booted - To be accidentally disconnected from a game. "I was right in the middle of a firefight, when my computer was booted..."

     20. Kicked - To be ejected from a game by other players. "We kicked him for cheating."

     21. FF - Short for friendly fire. "I hate playing on servers with FF - I always get team-killed."

     23. Rush - An immediate, all-out attack on the opposing team. "Rush them as soon as the round starts!"

     25. Represent - An exclamation and call to battle. "[DR]s, represent!"

The characters in Small City USA like to use a lot of l337 and lingo. Check out this web comic on the Links page!

Self-Test: Try to make sense of this story...

"So, we were LANing last night when -=P.O.D.=- challenged our clan to scrim. Things were going OK (even though I was lagging a lot) when all of a sudden this n00b - I mean he had no tags at all - logged on to the server. Before we could get rid of him he just started rushing everyone and he even shizzled my hizzle with the n00b cannon! It was the worst unw00t I've had in a long time. And then he tried to say all this stuff in horrible l337 but finally we kicked him. And then, after that, I kept getting AWPed through crates by this camper. I swear he was a h4x0r and was using a wall cheat, but finally I just represented and fragged him with my pistol."
